EUR-OCEANS Knowledge Transfer Activities

Research-based knowledge can be effectively transferred through collaborative partnerships and interactive engagement with other scientists and decision-makers. EUR-OCEANS facilitates exchange of research-based knowledge and interaction between its scientists and decision-makers by making funds available to organise and attend world-wide workshops, working groups and conferences. Such events provide an excellent opportunity for scientists to share their current research and ideas with a wide range user groups and will facilitate the transfer of EUR-OCEANS research-based knowledge directly to the user community.

There are also a number of activities taking place within the network itself to facilitate sharing of knowledge internally, for example the EUR-OCEANS Mobility programme, see below for more details.

Below are a list of some of the events that EUR-OCEANS scientists have participated in, that are of particular relevance to EUR-OCEANS knowledge transfer.

External Activities

Stakeholder perception workshop: 21-22 April 2008 at Schiphol A4 hotel, Amsterdam/Schiphol Airport
Attended by representatives from NGO’s, Policymakers, Managers, Environmentalists and Scientists throughout Europe. The workshop was organised by three EU funded (INEXFISH, RECLAIM and IMAGE) projects investigating the possible changes needed in fisheries management as a result of the potential effects of climate variability.

Workshop on the Integration of of Environmental Information into Fisheries Management Strategies and Advice (WKEFA)
Following a preparatory meeting in February which developed a strategy and identified a number of relevant case studies, the main workshop co-sponsored by ICES, EUR-OCEANS, and GLOBEC met from 18–22 June 2007. Fourteen cases studies involving a wide range of demersal and pelagic stocks, as well as some generic stock simulations were presented over the first two days. The main results from the case studies and the demonstrated influence of environmental change on the stocks are summarised in the report. Over the remaining 2½ days these cases were then used to discuss and formulate generic concepts for improving fisheries management strategies and advice considering interactions under four main aspects:
a) Entries and exits from populations (recruitment, natural mortality and migration)
b) Internal population processes, encompassing a range of aspects associated with
growth maturation and reproduction.
c) Location and habitat (including such aspects as vertical and horizontal
movement)
d) Multispecies interactions

ICES Annual Conference 2005
The conference was attended by EUR-OCEANS scientists, many of whom contributed to the themed sessions through presentations and posters. The EUR-OCEANS themed session on An Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management: worked examples". The session provided a great opportunity for EUR-OCEANS scientists to share some of their most recent and xciting research activities with the Fisheries community....further details>>

Manuel Barange and Philippe Cury presented on the activities of EUR-OCEANS workpackage 6 (Ecosystem Approach to Marine Resources) and workpackage 9 (Knowledge Transfer)

Internal Activities

User's Needs Survey
The importance of transferring scientific results from science to user communities continues
to grow in strategic importance and is now built into the majority of EU funded projects. This survey aimed to develop our understanding of both the individual needs of specific socio-economic users as well as gaining better understanding of those methods which are thought to be most effective and which could be improved. It is also vital to find out if any key barriers remain across communities that may be hindering successful knowledge transfer.

This survey has provided insight into both the methods preferred by users for knowledge
transfer and the areas which need improvement. The use of the internet is wide spread in the
user and science communities, and although effective in some instances this survey clearly
showed that a coordinated approach from the European marine science community would be
beneficial to users. There were also many users who still valued personal interactions with
scientists, highlighting the importance of cross community conferences and symposium
where the user and scientific communities can meet and discuss issues. Continued and
sustained interaction and openness between scientists and users communities is vital to
improve the transfer of scientific findings. Maintaining openness and transparency will help
develop trust between the two communities leading to more effective working relationships.

EUR-OCEANS Mobility Programme
EUR-OCEANS runs a mobility programme to facilitate the internal transfer of knowledge and expertise across the network. The programme provides funds for EUR-OCEANS scientists to travel to other Institutes in the Network to learn new skills and techniques. Several types of exchanges were offered: mini-sabbaticals, short visits and technical exchanges. This programme offers a great opportunity share knowledge and facilitate integration across the network. Click here to see those scientists selected for the mobility programme in 2006.

Knowledge Transfer Task Team meetings
The first meeting of the EUR-OCEANS Knowledge Transfer Task Team was held at PML in December 2005. The Team discussed the development of Knowledge Transfer within EUR-OCEANS. The key outcome of the meeting was an agreement on a dedicated EUR-OCEANS Knowledge Transfer Strategy to guide and drive future Knowledge Transfer activities.
