"PO4 budget module" from PISCES v1 Equations
Same equation in other models :
Equation Description :
Phosphate concentration with time and location is controlled by production by the two phytoplankton groups, P and D, DOC remineralization, plus contributions from micro- (Z) and mesozooplankton (M) grazing. Each group grazes on multiple preys and detritus and the term (1-sigma-e) represents the phosphate released in the water that is not assimilated or excreted and exported as fecal pellets.
Parameter values and definitions:
gamma = grazing preferences for micro- (Z) and mesozooplankton (M) for the respective prey or detrital particles;
e.g.:
gamma D Z = 0.5 (microzooplankton preference for diatoms);
gamma N Z = microzooplankton preference for species N (eg P, D, POCs);
gamma P Z = 0.5 (microzooplankton preference for nanophytoplankton);
gamma POC Z = 0.0 (microzooplankton preference for POCs);
gamma D M = 1 (mesozooplankton preference for diatoms);
gamma N M = mesozooplankton preference for species N (eg P, D, POCs);
gamma P M = 0.2 (mesozooplankton preference for nanophytoplankton);
gamma POC M = 0.2 (mesozooplankton preference for POCs);
sigma = 0.3 (fecal pellets production);
lambda* DOC = DOC remineralization rate (see link below for equation);
mu = production by phytoplankton groups (P) and (D);
D = concentration of diatoms in micro mol C l-1;
DOC = DOC concentration in micro mol C l-1;
e = 0.35 no units (zooplankton growth efficiency);
g = 4, 0.7 d -1 (max grazing rate for micro- and mesozooplankton);
M = concentration of mesozooplankton in micro mol C l-1;
P = concentration of nanophytoplankton in micro mol C l-1;
POC = POC concentration in micro mol C l-1;
Z = concentration of microzooplankton in micro mol C l-1;
