Differential equation for the concentration of NH4 (ammonium). In all the formulations, physical terms of diffusion and advection are eliminated for simplicity.

Gpp = gross primary production rate (micro mol N l-1 day-1)
PLn = diatom biomass (micro mol N l-1)
psi L = 1.5 (micro mol N l-1)-1 (Diatom Ammonium Inhibition Coefficient)
psi S = 1.5 (micro mol N l-1)-1 (nanophytoplankton ammonium inhibition coefficient)
PSn = nanophytoplankton biomass (micro mol N l-1)
Res = respiration rate (micro mol N l-1 day-1)
RnewL = f-ratio of diatoms defined by NO3 uptake to total uptake (see link to 'NO3 budget module' below for full equation)
RnewS = f-ratio of nanophytoplankton defined by NO3 uptake to total uptake
Nit = nitrification rate (micro mol N l-1 day-1)
