"microzooplankton budget module" from PISCES v1 Equations

equation

Equation Description :

Microzooplankton budget in PISCES is a function of ingestion of the two phytoplankton groups and small detritus, and losses via excretion. N represents the grazing on each species – nanophytoplankton (P), diatoms (D) and POC, and is defined following Fasham et al. (1993).

Microzooplankton experiences mortality only through mesozooplankton predation.

Parameters definitions and typical values in PISCES:
D = diatom concentration micro mol C l-1;
e Z = 0.35 (microzooplankton growth efficiency);
g Z = 4 d-1 (max grazing rate);
I = phytoplankton groups microzooplankton can graze on, P and D;
K G Z = 20 micro mol C l-1 (half-saturation k for grazing);
K Z = 0.1 micro mol C l-1 (half-saturation k for excretion);
P = nanophytoplankton concentration micro mol C l-1;
p D Z (or gamma D) = 0.5 (microzooplankton preference for diatoms);
p N Z = microzooplankton preference for species N (eg P, D, POCs);
p P Z (or gamma P) = 0.5 (microzooplankton preference for nanophytoplankton);
p POC Z (or gamma POC) = 0.0 (microzooplankton preference for POC);
POCs = small POC concentration;
r Z = 0.03 d-1 (excretion rate);
